Via Urbium
What is the VIA URBIUM?
VIA URBIUM means “city road”. This route invites you to three cities in Central Europe, which are similar to each other in many ways: Szombathely, Maribor in Slovenia and Varaždin in Croatia.
Cities with a shared past
All three cities trace their roots to the late middle ages. Indeed, Savaria, the ancient city was already inhabited in Roman times. All three lie on the rim of the Pannonian Plain and “grew up” in the same historical milieu. To begin with, the local aristocracy had the Holy Roman Emperor as a common ruler. Then for a while they were all under the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, and then Varaždin and Maribor were brought together by the creation of the former Yugoslavia.
Historic old towns, events, rich local programmes
Maribor, Szombathely and Varaždin all have picturesque old towns with rich cultural heritages that offer numerous other attractions too: domestic (and “imported”) culinary delicacies, high quality cultural events, entertainment and recreation, and pleasant programmes in surrounding regions where everything from ancient vines, through unmatched cultural and natural sights, to a wide range of possible excursions and recreation activities can be enjoyed.
Three in One
The three day city tour helps us to get acquainted with all three cities, to “taste” them and to compare them to each other. Due to the excellent transport connections between them it is easy to visit the cities one after another.
